Hey guys. First and foremost, thanks for watching. I read almost every comment, believe it or not, and a few of you have left a couple talking about the section of the video where I ask Bruce about the colorism that viewers noticed within the cast, primarily with Penny's best friend Dijonay Jones. While everyone's really happy that I asked about this, as it's been discussed for years without any real commentary from the other side, stepping back, I can see how this could come off as underdeveloped on my part. I think the main thing I want to apologize for is not specifying that colorism is something that not only has to do with skin tone, but sex and gender as well. "Dark skin black guy" has a different connotation than "dark skin black girl." There's different tropes and such associated with that stuff. And I take full responsibility for not including such an important detail. Honestly, I feel so bad about it that I've considered taking the video down. I'm well aware that I can't please everyone or speak for every black person on the face of the Earth nor do I try to (which is why I tried to leave that section of the video open ended), but this is an important topic. Something that means a lot to so many, including our black women. I hope nothing I said in that section came off as dismissive to that point of view and there aren't really words to articulate how sorry I am if they did, even in the slightest. I really hope you guys still enjoy the video and are able to get something from it. But for the hollowness of my coverage of the issue, I take full responsibility. Much love, thanks again.

Well I would like to say, first and foremost do not remove the video if you wish to expand about any detail, perhaps another video addressing the idea would constitute.

This was Fascinating! I hope I don't lose my black card for this but I've never got into the Proud Family. This makes me want to give it another shot, especially hearing Bruce Address some of the issues I had with the show. I hope they introduce some new characters! I couldn't relate to the main ones but this gives me hope. This type of series is needed right now that's for sure! Great job on the video! I'm looking forward to watching the new series! Also, LOVE that a big chunk fo the people working on it are actually black. Black people being behind the show is just as important. :)

I’m about 20 mins into the video so far, and I honestly have to say it was one of the shows that I really enjoyed as a lonely kid. My parents were house broke on the edge of the suburbs in a mainly white and euro-asian community. But I personally really related to this content even though some of the words or imagery didn’t match my own life. I was still able to relate to the emotional matrix of the show as young as I was watching it. And I think it really helped influence a small part of my personal view of the world in regards to equality and cultural openness.

I absolutely loved this show as a kid, I remember watching is after getting my tonsils out in 2nd grade and I remember in middle school my neighbors paid me to get their daughters off the bus and watch them at my house for an hour until their grandpa picked them up and I got them both watching this show even though they had no clue about it before me that’s all they would talk about afterwards, such warm memories :)

I mean, I'm white, and I grew up loving The Proud Family. There really was something different and unique about it. It wasn't just a look into another family dynamic, but a sort of life I'd never known as an ignorant kid. Reboots are always tricky, but I'd love to see what they'd do with the show. How would it evolve to fit the times we live in, where social media is much more prevalent than ever before, and we essentially live online just as infrequently? Anyway, this was a really cool video and it provided a lot of insight that I just didn't have back when I was a kid. Thanks for making it (really cool that you got in touch with the show's creator, too!).

I'm a white guy born in the mid-90s and grew up in mostly white suburbs. The Proud Family was one of my first media pieces that introduced me to black culture, and I enjoyed the show just as much as shows like Kim Possible. I actually traced a copy of Oscar's portrait onto a background and hung it on the outside of my first boss's office door (he was the director of a youth summer camp and I was like 14 at the time). My boss was a goofy and fun family man -- and he think he liked it especially because he was family with the show and his children watched it. My boss was black, and working under him for several summers is how I learned AAVE. I do vaguely remember the "gay" character from Proud Family, but I hadn't realized that I was gay at that point in time -- and hearing about it in retrospect, I really love the representation. And sadly, the gay community also does not allow enough space for people of color (probably mostly black Americans) since much of the gay community is dominated by white cultural aspects. I've seen many gay black men complain about gay clubs, bars, and other spaces just not making an effort to appeal to their entertainment preferences, and many white gay men turning a blind eye to these discrepancies. I'm really excited to see what the reboot looks like, and hopefully they can cover much more complex and mature topics.

Suga Mama was kind of an asshole to Oscar and vice versa. I remember a lot of scenes in the show that just involve Oscar insulting Suga Mama, and Suga Mama hurting him in some way in response, from throwing something at him to straight-up punching him right in the face. It's a very strained relationship, especially considering how Suga Mama treats her other son, Bobby Proud. I guess you could say their relationship is dysfunctional? *ba dum tsssssss*

I just wanna comment that that Penny Proud girl has an uncanny similarity to the character Tomie Kawakami from Junji Ito's Tomie. Every part of her face is identical: The eyes, the pupils, the beauty mark, the eyebrows, the mouth, even her nose is pretty similar. I don't know if this is a coincidence or they were inspired from the same source but its really nagging me and it doesn't seem like anyone else has pointed it out before me.
