Martin’s Story ("The Visitor") vs Reality (Islands) - Adventure Time Analysis

Martin answered Finn’s question of where he came from in the episode “The Visitor,” and while many elements of the story were suspect, we had no way of knowing what the truth was until the release of the Islands miniseries. In retrospect, there are a lot of interesting things to analyze and dissect in Martin’s original and semi-fraudulent tale, and I think this helps us gain a better understanding of Martin Mertens as a character.

It’s a shame that Finn and Minerva will never know what actually happened. From Minerva’s perspective, her partner abandoned her and took her son with him for no reason whatsoever. From Finn’s perspective, his father betrayed his mother and put his life in serious danger. The only one who knew what happened was Martin. But he didn’t want to mend any bridges that he burned and just stuck to the only thing he was good at before he met Minerva: being a con artist.

I feel like Martin has always had “other intentions” as seen when he met Minerva. He was working as a double agent so that he could suggest certain figures should escape the island just to report them within a few minutes of them leaving. I feel like when he got the head injury, all of it “caught up to him” in the sense that it kept him from returning to a half normal life. It kept him in the mindset that he needs to Con to Survive so that’s why he lies in every situation and why he puts himself first. Either to get rid of the itch for cons or to keep him focused away from the past or his head injury. Just a guess

I’d assume Martin becoming such a bad person after sustaining brain damage is because he’s always been a bad person. He just reverted back to what he’d always done, before he met Finn’s mom.

You know I never noticed until now but Mertins couldn’t handle what he did so after his brain injury his trauma response MADE him into someone who could. His own messed up delusions on what he did, his own self imagine made him into who he is now. Think about it, after he left Finn, after he abandoned his infant son on a raft to die. (which remember is how he sees the incident, instead of the truth, which was him doing what he had to do to protect his son) He felt guilty, he felt selfish, he saw himself as a person with no remorse, someone who would sacrifice his son to save himself, someone who only lived for themselves and had no moral qualms with hurting people he cared about if he was fine. Him thinking that about himself paired with the injury and his trauma response (running away and ignoring his mistakes/problems) led him into changing into someone who could do those things to his son. He changed into this person because he couldn’t deal with what he did, so he made himself able to deal with what he did. He ran away from the past and over time he turned into the person he thought he was.
Anonymous 0136
Anonymous 0136 2 ай мурун
I just realized when he left Finn he couldn’t handle being someone who hurt their own son so much, he couldn’t deal with the guilt of leaving him, of being so selfish and greedy. But because of his tendency to run away, his brain damage and his trauma he forced himself to become someone who could do that without remorse. He felt so terrible about it, and he couldn’t deal with doing that so much that his trauma response and brain made him into someone selfish so he could deal with what he did. So he could forgive himself and keep living. (I came to this conclusion when someone commented that it wasn’t cheap for his personality change to purely be explained by brain damage where I responded with this; Well I think they meant that if his problems were purely caused by brain damage it would be “cheap”. Martins issues were caused by a mix of guilt, trauma and brain damage and purely linking the brain damage to his personality change would be a huge mistake. While it would show moral ambiguity in its characters and cause the viewer to see they could easily change it takes away from his trauma and the effects that trauma had on him and Finn. It does cheapen his experiences and their effect on him, because if it’s purely the result of brain damage that means that everything he went through didn’t matter and as long as he went through the injury he would have changed into who he is now. The things other people have noticed, the tiger on the boat, or the winking that now means lying wouldnt have as much meaning. What makes his character so amazing is the fact his change wasn’t just because of the injury, but because of his own mistakes and how he dealt with them. The mix of the brain damage messing with him, the guilt of leaving Finn, of breaking his promise, of abandoning his child, thinking that it was purely his fault that he left him, that’s what caused his character change. He couldn’t deal with what he did although he had no choice and that paired with his head injury and how he dealt with that trauma (running away from it), caused him to change into what he thought he was at that moment, someone who would leave his son behind for his own selfishness. That’s what makes his character so amazing. He was good and he changed for an actual reason, a valid reason not a good one. That was what made his character beautiful in a sad way. How trauma he could barely remember (from the injury and probably just because he repressed it), influenced him into who he was now. How even if he was trying to be good, he still made a mistake and that mistake with the injury led to his change. If anything it points of that he’s more morally ambiguous, he had the best intentions but the consequence of those intentions hurt him so bad that he turned into this. He couldn’t deal with being someone who left his son, so he MADE himself into someone who could deal with it. That’s a perfect way of expressing his trauma and the affects it had on him as a person. His trauma, his past was the most important part in his change, and if you completely ignore that part of his development it cheapens the meaning behind the things he does, behind the person he is now. You have to keep in mind both the brain damage and the trauma or his personality doesn’t mean as much. He’s just someone who changed because they got physically hurt, his past doesn’t matter if it’s just brain damage. But his past is what made present him into him. It’s why he winks when he lies, it’s why he thinks he so horrible, why he’s so selfish, why he pretends not to care, or tries his best not to care. Purely changing because of brain damage destroys all of that, he’s just a man who got hurt and the chemicals in his brain changed him into who he was. It doesn’t show the depth in his change, it doesn’t show the pain, the guilt, the loss, it was purely chance and that probably would’ve ruined his character for me, because he wouldn’t be someone who changed because of their pain, their guilt, their own self image but someone who just changed because of the chemicals their brain releases.)

I think it was definitely brain damage and the fact that nobody ever tried to help him, he was also never in contact with his son again, so the damage to his brain became so severe that he almost changed completely. The brain damage wasn’t cheap, that’s just dumb to say that. It obviously wasn’t the only reason, he was also ashamed of himself for not being able to save Finn. He probably thought he died. The crimes he committed and the fact that he felt so guilty were both factors in his change.

I liked Martin too, he was a fun character and I liked seeing him again in Distant Lands: BMO while technically not confirmed to be him Mr. M does have heavy hinting that he's Martin. I didn't really like seeing Martin's story end with him basically being cut out completely with the comet because I think it would've been interesting for him to maybe get into the Islands miniseries somehow and take down his mental barriers which would give him a lot of character development but would put the character in a situation difficult to end him on, like what's he gonna do next after he remembers? he's not exactly needed for the story anymore so what's the character's purpose?

1:35 is pretty invalidating to people with amnesia. Do you not understand head injuries or does real life just seem too unrealistic to you? "A massive disservice to his character"????? He's a fuckin asshole. That's his character. He doesn't have a good design or character in the first place, which is the point. Just because you don't like how something sounds doesn't make it impossible or unlikely. If Adventure time has taught us anything it's that permanent injury isn't something to be taken lightly. Look what happened to Susan. If that isn't evidence enough idk what is. not to mention literally half the characters in the show remember almost nothing. Either they deny it all or suffer some form of mental disability.
King Wesley
King Wesley 3 ай мурун
Man I was sugar coating my first response, you people are just in denial. You can't possibly fathom something you can't understand or relate to so you deny every piece of evidence that supports it. He didn't "just" get a concussion. He suffers severe brain damage in a personality altering way. People in real life have had the same thing happen FOR NO REASON. If you woke up with amnesia tomorrow in a place you didn't know, as a person you don't know, you'd develop some quirks too. The injury doesn't invalidate his story, in fact, his "story" wasn't much of one to begin with. He was a shitty person and then left. Whoopty fucking doo welcome to the other shitty fathers club. But that's not what happened. Just because you can't understand or fathom reality doesn't make it not exist idiots.

I always thought the reason Martin went insane was because of the grief of losing his only son. He tried looking for him but due to the explosion he lost a good portion of his memories. So when he finally found his son he couldn't believe it at first, but when he did and realized what he did he just found he couldn't live with what he did. So he bailed.

Martin did tell Minerva that if he wanted to con her he would make her feel bad for him and that's 100% how their relationship started, but I think Martin really did end up loving Minerva. After he was lost in the sea with Finn on the raft I think since he knew he could never go back he just tried to convince himself it actually was just a long con, so the loss wouldn't hurt as much. He is already a very charismatic and conniving guy, so he would probably use his own tricks on himself to numb the pain. After doing this for 16 years it fucked him up enough that he lost basically all parental instincts and any trace of his former self

While I understand from a writing point, if you don't look into it much "concussion" characters are really one note I think it still works with Martin. Obviously, Martin was already a scumbug since he used to be scammer , but using the idea of "he got a concussion" can be even sadder if think you really think about. Because assumingly, Martin GOT BETTER, he got better from the concussion or brain damage and was able to look after himself again, and STILL didn't go back. I'm explaining this terribly but assume from a story point if Martin was a amnesia character, if he got amnesia, became an absolute asshole, and then got his memories back (Even if they are a little muddled) wouldn't most characters who remember things start looking for their families? Usually! But Martin didn't. Martin kept being a scumbag even when he got his memories back. I know it still falls back to him being a scum bag, but I think it really talks about how much love he used to feel for Minerva and Finn, becaus his love for them both were the only reasons he was a good person, and now that he is not near the people that kept him in check, he's even worse than before. I don't think both the theories of "concussion so he's an asshole" and "he's an asshole because he's repressing his memories" have to be exclusive of each other, I think together they can both be helpful in developing his character. Either way, I think saying the concussion idea is "Cheap" is too early to say. Since Martin is low key a scum bag when he was younger, so obviously there was some thought process behind it other than just "Amnesia" now he's a GIANT scumbag." Fun discussion though, makes you really think.

I believe Martin felt so ashamed of not being able to be with his son, that he exiled himself and unloved himself in such a way that he lost so much of himself over the years. A person could treat themselves in such a way when they believe they are a detriment or have done something so wrong. It’s like a mental break and then you become a lost soul, blocking and forgetting the past because it was so traumatic. You might seem like a jovial character but when you dig deeper into that person and hear them in their quiet hours- you will hear the past come out in sobs and whimpers.

It's a possibility that Martin's brain damage pretty much destroyed his right ventrolateral PFC. The part of the brain that control inhibitions. I know Martin's Amnesia problem gives a lazy explanation for his character but thinking about it, it's also intresting to see the impact that Finn recieves. In a normal situation we can blame Martin for not taking responsibility, but the conflict here also brought the fact that it doesn't matter why Martin is a douche. Because Finn never knew his father however he also never needed him. He had a father for himself. It doesn't matter who Martin used to be in the past. He is an asshole father now. If he wasn't surely Finn would be happy to have a new dad. But he is not and what's important is Finn doesn't need him. It also proves that nothing -NOTHING- justifies his acts. Neither Amnesia nor denial.

I want there to be one last special episode where we see Martin after he lost Finn and him deciding to leave his past life behind, leading him to end up in the citadel. Maybe before he leaves Earth he writes a final letter to his family as a way of moving on, and Finn later finds the letter and reads it to Minerva Bot. I think thatd be a good way to finally wrap up their family story
