Martin’s Story ("The Visitor") vs Reality (Islands) - Adventure Time Analysis

Martin answered Finn’s question of where he came from in the episode “The Visitor,” and while many elements of the story were suspect, we had no way of knowing what the truth was until the release of the Islands miniseries. In retrospect, there are a lot of interesting things to analyze and dissect in Martin’s original and semi-fraudulent tale, and I think this helps us gain a better understanding of Martin Mertens as a character.

Considering that the guy was a scoundrel in the past and that is hardly disputed, brain damage being the reason for his character change DOES make sense if it came with scrambling up his past memories. I doubt it's all repression and the like, I think he just honestly didn't know at first and only had subconscious knowledge, potentailly coming back more as time went on. Of course, by the time he left with the comet, he had burned all his bridges and didn't really have much hope of rebuilding things with Finn (and didn't know if his wife was even alive or what she thought of him). He couldn't really go back after that.

People’s personalities and behaviors have changed dramatically as result from brain damage many times. Its heavily documented. Id google it. Its not a bad plot device when used right. Adventure Time did a good job of it.

I mean yeah amnesia and brain damage can be a cheap plot device but life is cheap like that sometimes. Brain damage is known to change people's personalities on occasion, and from what I have heard it usually is for the worse.

I know this video is years old at this point, but I wanted to mention the wink. Yes, he winks when he lies, its kind of his "tell" and probably isn't usually intentional. He did wink in the past when telling finn he'd come back for him. Because, even if he wanted to, he knew this was a lie. He wasn't expecting to live through that. Thats why his expression looks so sad, he knows its the last time that he'll see his son, and is just trying to be reassuring.

Y'know, I kinda wonder... bit of a stretch, maybe, but... do you think Martin has a Vault? A place in his mind where he stores the things he can't handle. Martin was always a scoundrel, and we have no hints of his life prior to meeting Minerva, but scoundrels generally come from broken families. How could a family break in such a tightly controlled society? Maybe Martin's parents tried to escape, but they were captured and re-educated... maybe that's why Martin was so confident he would avoid re-education; he may have spent his entire life avoiding it. So Martin may have grown up without a family, without love, relying only on himself... until he met Minerva. And for a brief while he felt love again. But no sooner did he have it and it was ripped away once again; he fought to protect it, risking his life ... and he failed. For all he knew, Finn died on that raft. If he couldn't handle the guilt of letting his newborn son die... it may very well be that he stored that guilt, and with it every last hope of finding love again, in his Vault... where he stores all of his repressed memories. Just like Finn.

Martin was a conman before Min took him in and while he hoped he could outrun it and be a good man, but it came back to kill Finn as far as he could tell. He also lost his memories of what exactly led up to Finn's attempted kidnapping/murder so he would never have been able to explain his innocence. He would return to Min without their child and lacking a chunk of his memories leading up to the encounter, at best. He lost everything that kept him from being the character he became. And even by the end of his and Finn's story, has no other place to go and won't be a liability to his child. I think the storytelling holds up.

Ok wait. He was a scoundrel before he met Minerva. I always thought of him as going back to being a scoundrel once the positive influence of Minerva in his life was missing. I've also wanted to beilive that he did look for Finn, and couldn't find him. and that loss drove him further and further away from from home. so he went back to the life that he had before Minerva because he could never go back and tell her how he lost their son... ironically this probably saved both Maritn and Finn's life since the virus killed Minerva...

You could also say the wink does mean Martin is lying and even in the past he does it before saving Finn. Martin could of thought he would die trying to save Finn and when he tells Baby Finn he'll be back he saying to reassure Finn but in his mind Martin may not believe he'll make it back yo his son. Either way it does show the love Martin has for Finn in that moment of self sacrifice.

I wish Martin made an appearance in the last segment of adventure time, like around where fin used the that nightmare potion thing to stop the gum war, i would have allowed for that emotional wall to be broken down(like with fern and finn). You dont even need to change anything, you just have everyone sort stuff out, but finn doesnt wake up, and then he sees his dad :p, and bam, story time and understanding. Maybe we could even see some of martins life after the events that separeted them, curious to see what pushed him over the edge You could also have Martin come in through the portal when normal man and betty appear and then in the scene where finn, betty and simon are stuck in golb, you add martin there too. You could even change the interaction of golbs digestion and have a projection of their lives above thier heads while they are getting 'broken down'. Then in the end you somehow incorporate how martin needs to stay with betty in order to save them all. Its really hard to incorporate from that point onwards, but it would have been great for some closure on his story.

Thing is, traumatic brain injury is real, and believable. Martin was kind of a jerk before, he was tricking people into hopes of escape, then selling them out to get double the rewards. But from kind of a jerk who learns to care about someone else, he goes to total sociopath. It's less believable for him to totally shift in character like that, to just dump the infant Finn without a second thought without something else at play. Much like Ice king has elements of dementia and alzheimers, MArtin is likely suffering the effects of repeated head trauma and brain damage, mixing with his post traumatic stress from being ripped away from his wife. And his history of head-trauma doesn't begin with the guardian. He's tossed by the seekers, smashes his head in the hospital and 100% got a concussion trying to escape. He got another good hit fighting the guardian. We have real documentations of people with repeated head trauma going through similar changes. Saying it's a 'disservice to his character' just shows that person doesn't know what they are talking about. Physical brain trauma is a big deal, just as much so as mental trauma. Combined both, and you have a recipe for turning a mild jerk into a total monster. IMO, it makes him more sympathetic than him just being healthy and deciding "Yeah, Imma dump my son on a leaf in the forest and never come back."

Holy shit you think that a loss of impulse control resulting from brain damage compounding unresolved trauma and guilt is a bad way to handle a character? Did you sleep through the ice king story? TBI is an amazing, real world explanation and I don't think asking the audience to have empathy for the man he used to be is a bad thing. That he has lost control of himself is the tragedy of Martin. If he acknowledges his past he has to acknowledge what he's lost and he's not capable of that when we meet him. I don't need to justify it with 'a wizard did it' to appreciate this story.
Uncivilized Elk

Ice King story is completely different from Martin's in how it's explored in Adventure Time, because it actually focuses on the loss of what was once there and how that change rippled out across those who knew Simon (and would later come to know Ice King, and through Ice King learn about Simon). So yes, falling back on brain damage to substantiate Martin's actions ends up being a lackluster hand-wavey explanation because that core premise of brain damage wasn't explored at all narratively or thematically when it comes to Martin. Brain damage thus becomes purely a superfluous interpretation (at best) when the story doesn't so much as even acknowledge said brain damage (much less actually dig into the concept in a meaningful manner).

So, Finn's vault has a hereditary link. If I thought something from my past was the reason my son died (which Martin had to have believed), I would never be able to face his father. And the only way I could live with myself would be to shove everything away, past and all, and never let anything close to me again. I recognized the line about burning bridges and moving forward because I'd said it before. I absolutely get Martin. This show is so freaking great at being real.

I don't think the idea of a concussion or amnesia cheapens Martin's arc, but rather elevates the influence Minerva and Finn had on him. Martin's arc begins when he arrives on the islands, where he is the con man we know later. His life with Minerva and Finn is the driving force for his change, having been the kind of person who doesn't keep a home long. Staying in one place and setting roots lets him grow and evolve as a person instead of just trying to survive. During the escape, Martin does everything he can to protect Finn, something he's entirely unwilling to do later on, implying that he really doesn't understand the importance of Finn, but might have vague nagging feelings or impressions that he plays out by using his natural way with words. This angle shows just how much the 'Helper' ideology of Minerva influenced Martin and his love for Finn drove his choices for a short amount of time. The concussion/amnesia idea gives a way for Martin to lose all of that progress and thus Finn has to deal with the fact that the father he meets is not the one that loved and raised him(however briefly). This is primarily the story of Finn after all.
